Volk Ophthalmic Lenses

Volk built the modern condensing lens. David Volk's double-aspheric designs became the standard for slit lamp indirect ophthalmoscopy, and the lenses are still made in Mentor, Ohio. Three generations are in current use: the Classic series that established the design, the Super series that widened the field and improved small-pupil performance, and the Digital series with higher-index glass and better anti-reflective coatings. Whitecotton Vision supplies the slit lamp, binocular indirect and gonioscopy lines, and will help you pick the two or three lenses that actually earn a place on your bench rather than selling you a full set.

Choosing Rather Than Collecting

Most practices need three lenses, not thirty. The useful question is what each one is for.

Slit Lamp

A general-purpose lens for the disc and macula, and usually a wider-field companion for the periphery. The higher the dioptric power, the wider the field and the lower the magnification, which is why a 90D and a 78D end up on the same bench doing different jobs.

Indirect (BIO)

A lens for dilated peripheral examination, most often in the 20D to 28D range, with wider-field options when you spend real time in the far periphery.

Gonioscopy

Angle assessment, typically a four-mirror for dynamic indentation gonioscopy and a three-mirror when you also want peripheral retinal views.
